Awards
MBNC has a variety of awards for both player and team recognition. Our goal is to recognize as many players as possible. Each age division has an awards presentation immediately following the completion of both the Championships and Consolation Finals.
The “John A. Dougherty Sportsmanship Award”
The “Dougherty” is our most prestigious award. It honors former Tournament Director John Dougherty. John was a teacher and coach in the Broward County School District and was responsible for bringing the Tournament while still in its infancy to South Florida. John passed away at a very young age in 1987.
The list of all the “Dougherty” winners can be found each year in our annual Souvenir Program and on the web site.
Team Awards
Team awards are presented to each coach or team organizer whose team is either the winner or second place in either the Championship bracket or the Consolation bracket.
Player Awards
Each player on the winning and second place teams in every age division in both the Championship and Consolation brackets will receive an attractive award recognizing their accomplishments.
All Tournament Teams
An “All Tournament” team is selected from each age division and is announced after the completion of the Championship Finals. During the week of play, coaches from each team cast ballots at the end of each game for players who had outstanding performances for that game. It could be based on strong rebounding, defensive play, scoring or on overall contribution to the team effort.
The votes are tabulated by Staff during the week and the awards go to the top 10 vote getters in each age division. The votes are tabulated through the semi final games in the 4, 6 and 8 team divisions and through the first four games for the 5 or 1o team divisions.
An attractive individual award is presented to each player selected.
Most Valuable Player Awards
A “Most Valuable Player” is selected from each age division in both the Championship and Consolation brackets. These selections are made immediately following each Finals game and are made by a committee appointed by the Board of Directors of MBNC. NO COACH HAS ANY INPUT INTO THESE SELECTIONS.
MVP’s from the Championship games will be awarded the prestigious “Jostens” Masters Basketball – National Championships ring. This beautiful gold ring is set with a black stone reserved only for the MVP ring. The ring has proven to be very popular and is being worn with pride by past winners.
MVP‘s from the Consolation Finals games will also be given an appropriate award that they can proudly display.
