Bracketing and Advancement
Age divisions are organized with a minimum of 4 teams and are capped with a maximum of 8, with the exception that we will do a 10 team division, if the other divisions are not full at 8 teams.
Once entries are closed, Staff will evaluate all teams and seed teams according to past history and knowledge of the players on each roster. Brackets are set up to separate as much as possible, teams who met in semi finals and finals in the previous year.
4 Team Divisions
You will play each team once in preliminary play for your first 3 games, from Monday through Thursday with one day off. Teams are then ranked by standings and 1st place plays 4th place and 2nd place plays 3rd place in the semi finals on Friday. The winners of these games will play in the Championship final and the losers in the Consolation final on Saturday. Each team will play 5 games over the course of the week.
5 Team Divisions or Brackets
In a 5 team division or bracket, each team will play 4 games Monday through Friday with one bye day.
In a 5 team division, teams are ranked by win – loss records. 1st place will play 2nd place in the Championship final and 3rd place will play 4th place in the Consolation final.
In a 10 team division of two five team brackets, the two 1st place teams in each bracket will play in the Championship final and the two 2nd place teams will play in the Consolation final. Teams are also ranked by win – loss records or the “Tie Breaker” formula if required.
6 Team Divisions
In a 6 team division, there are two brackets of 3 teams. One of the three preliminary games will be a crossover with a team in the other bracket. Teams’ finishing 1st and 2nd in each bracket will play in the Championship round semi final on Friday. 1st place from one bracket will play 2nd place from the other.
The two teams from each bracket finishing 3rd will play a semi final game on Friday with the winner advancing to the Consolation Final and will meet the losing team from the Championship semi final games with the best record.
8 Team Divisions
In an eight team division there are two 4 team brackets. The three preliminary games are played within each bracket on Monday through Thursday.
The teams finishing 1st in each bracket will play the teams finishing 2nd in the other bracket in the Championship round semi final on Friday. The teams finishing 3rd in each bracket will play the teams finishing 4th in the other bracket in the Consolation round semi final on Friday.
Winning teams in these semi final games advance to the Championship and Consolation finals on Saturday.
More often than not, win – loss records are tied. In these cases, we use our “Tie Breaker” system to determine standings. Please go to the “Tie Breaker” button on the Team Organizers Handbook page and be sure you are familiar with how this works.
VERY IMPORTANT REMINDERS
If you are notified that your team is the 7th entry in a division, you should not book travel reservations until such time that Staff has notified you that the 8th team entry has been received for that division. Under no circumstances do we have a 7 team division.
The Staff will do all possible to locate an 8th team, but there is no guarantee that we will be successful. A possible alternative would be an offer to play in a younger division if an opening is available. If we are unable to accommodate you, your entry fee will be promptly refunded.
Early entry submission is a very good idea if you want to avoid this situation and to guarantee your team a spot in the Tournament. The entry deadline is Saturday March 29th, 2008.
Teams are required to play all games as scheduled whether Championship or Consolation games. Forfeiting games in a national event such as MBNC is not permitted. We strongly urge Team Organizers to carry a 10 person roster in order to be competitive at the end of the week. This is a strenuous week regardless of the age division and injuries do occasionally occur.
